Dear TTCS Middle School Families:
Happy July! I hope your summer has been enjoyable so far. My name is Sharyn Gray, & I am proud to call myself Principal of the TTMS (middle school grades 6-8) program. I have been with TTCS for seven years now, first as a fourth grade teacher, then as the 6th grade math teacher, & most recently as Principal & 7th grade math teacher. I live just a few miles from the TTCS main campus, & love being a part of this special community - I’m the one that drives the graffiti “Coyote Car” you may have seen in the neighborhood. It’s a great feeling to stop at a light, hear a honk, & see smiling students waving at me!
First, one CORRECTION - the FIRST DAY OF MIDDLE SCHOOL (grades 6-8) is MONDAY, AUGUST 12th, not the 14th as stated in Dr. Griffin’s letter. Sorry about that!
We’ve been working hard to prepare for another great year at Turquoise Trail Middle School. I am thrilled to report that last year’s middle school students did a great job in the Academics department, with an average of 90% of students meeting their growth targets in Reading & Math – that’s impressive! However, we’re not stopping there - we still have work to do, as growth and proficiency (grade level attainment) are NOT the same. This year we will be focusing on improving proficiency levels so that all TTMS students are well prepared for any high school they choose to attend. I have been given a very high performance goal with expectations for students from our head administrator, Dr. Griffin, and I am confident we can meet these high expectations!
TTMS students receive a better education than they will at any other middle school in town through our excellent academic programs, including supplemental programs such as our new Running Start program. Students who did not meet their growth goals last year should plan to attend the Running Start Program July 22 - August 2nd from 8 - 11am at the TTCS main campus. Teachers will work with students to diagnose challenge areas & work on improving those skills in reading, writing, & math. This is a great opportunity for kids & families to show their commitment to education & get a “running start” for the upcoming school year. It is essential that students who are not at grade level attend this FREE opportunity. Please use this link to register: https://forms.gle/BFCSgCzFHpyE8DDWA
Our Community has seen some changes over the summer; I am excited to introduce you to all of our 5 new middle school staff members at the Gathering of the Pack on Thursday, August 8, starting at 4 pm. Student schedules will be distributed at that time. We will also hold workshops on our two major communication tools: Tyler 360, & Google Classroom. Please plan to attend these essential workshops. As the school year approaches, we will be sending out more information regarding electives, busing, schedules, & other important topics. Please check your email regularly & be sure your contact information in the main office is up to date!
Our focus at TTMS is to support students in becoming critical thinkers who can successfully navigate the challenges of our ever-changing world. We will be continuing & expanding our focus on Digital Media Arts, with many more elective courses in Visual & Performing Arts, Science & Engineering, & Technology. Our partnership with Santa Fe Studios & other community organizations will also grow & bring exciting opportunities to our students. Thank you for your continued support in helping us grow graduates who are Inspired, Engaged, & Prepared. See you soon!
Sharyn Gray, Middle School Principal
